DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?

Some people would like to try acupuncture but may not do so because they assume it will be painful. The needles used are extremely fine, so it is nothing like having injections. The patient should not feel the actual insertion of the needle, but changes in energy flow will be felt and can cause momentary discomfort. All needles are disposable, so there is no risk to the patient.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

The initial consultation, which takes about 2 hours, is very important and the acupuncturist will ask you about your medical and family history, lifestyle, how your various systems function (e.g. sleep, appetite) and your present condition. There will also be a simple, non-intrusive physical examination and a treatment. Subsequent treatments take approximately 1 hour.

NUMBER AND FREQUENCY OF TREATMENTS

Most people will come weekly to begin with and then less frequently as they feel better. The speed of improvement varies according to the person. Some people will only need a few treatments, whereas others will need more extensive treatment.
